Jim Meads was a photographer living in Hatfield, Hertfordshire near the Hatfield aerodrome in 1962. A pilot friend notified him on September 13th of that year that he would be test flying an English Electric Lightning F1 XG332 if he would like to come take some photos. Happy to get shots of the only British built fighter capable of Mach 2 speeds, he set out toward the airfield hoping to get photos of his children with the F1 landing in the background. Let's talk a bit about the oldest culture on earth: The Saan.  The Saan people (also formerly referred to as Bushmen) are members of different Khoe, Tuu, or Kxʼa speaking cultures. Those are the earliest known cultures in South Africa, spanning from territories like Namibia, Angola, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.  The Saan are among the oldest cultures on Earth and are believed to be the oldest human ancestors, with DNA tests proving they are the direct descendants of the first Homo sapiens. Although they have no official leader, they make decisions as a group where males and females are equal.

The largest-ever fossil of a giant millipede , Arthropleura, has been found on a beach in Northumberland, England. Dating back to the Carboniferous Period, about 326 million years ago, this millipede was over 2.5 meters (8 feet) long and weighed around 50 kilograms (110 pounds). The fossil was discovered by chance after a cliff section collapsed

Harihar fort :Harshagad is a fort located 40 km from Nashik City, 48 km from Igatpuri, 40 km from Ghoti in Nashik district, of Maharashtra in India. Harihar fort was built during the Seuna (Yadava) dynasty period. It was surrendered to Khan Zamam in 1636 along with Trymbak and other Pune forts.The fort appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village. It is built on a triangular prism of rock. Its three faces and two edges are absolutely vertical (90 degrees).The third edge towards the west is inclined at an angle of 75 degrees. A one metre wide rocky staircase with niches in it is carved out for ascending & descending the fort. There are 117 steps in all. After you climb the first rocky staircase (main entrance) we walk thru below a overhang with a sheer drop. Again one has to climb a set of steep stairs (with niches), then pass thru a staircase inside the rock and then reach the top of the fort.

The Story of Yasuke: The Black Samurai Yasuke was a man of African origin who arrived in Japan in the 16th century. He is said to have been brought by a Jesuit missionary, and his imposing presence and skills quickly caught the attention of Oda Nobunaga, one of the most powerful daimyo of the time. Nobunaga welcomed him into his court, where Yasuke became his bodyguard and a respected samurai. Yasuke excelled in battle and was known for his loyalty. On this day in 1927, the Shanghai insurrection took place as 800,000 workers walked out on general strike and a 5000-strong workers' militia seized arms and attacked police stations and army barracks. By the next morning the whole city, apart from the foreign concessions, was in the hands of the working class. On this day, 25 February 1792, groups of ‘sans-culottes’ invaded shops in France forcing the merchants to sell their goods at affordable prices. The sans-culottes were the common people of the lower classes who, during the French revolution, became its radical partisans, fighting for social and economic equality and popular democracy. As a result, they were denounced by the upper-classes as ‘counter-revolutionary’.

On this day, 20 October 1952, Governor Baring of Kenya signed an order declaring a State of Emergency to use emergency powers to crush the Mau Mau rebellion against British colonial rule (content note: sexual and physical violence).  Early the next morning British authorities carried out a mass arrest of over 180 allegedly Mau Mau leaders in Nairobi. Over the coming years the British would murder tens of thousands of civilians, throw 3-400,000 or more into concentration camps and displace over a million more into army-supervised villages which were essentially prison camps.  On top of this British forces dropped over 6 million bombs on the country and carried out a mass campaign of torture, mutilation, rape and castration. Tens of thousands of men, women, children and even babies were killed to suppress the uprising. Despite the repression, Britain was forced to grant Kenyan independence regardless in 1963.

For prisoners at the Attica Correctional Facility in the early 1970s, life was an absolute nightmare. Meant to hold 1,600 inmates, the prison actually held around 2,200, which led to overcrowding and rationing of supplies. Most incarcerated people there were limited to just one roll of toilet paper per month and one shower per week.  It was only a matter of time before tensions boiled over — and that's exactly what happened in September 1971. Hundreds of inmates took control of the facility and held dozens of prison guards hostage. They then demanded more livable and reasonable conditions behind bars. When the United States declared war on Great Britain in 1812, in response to British impressment of American sailors on the high seas, the U.S.S. Constitution was one of only 17 warships in the U.S. Navy. By comparison, Great Britain had the most powerful and skilled navy in the world, with over 600 ships, eighty-five of which were operating in American waters at the time war was declared. Medal of Honor Monday! 🇺🇸🇺🇸  At about this time in 1945, a hero receives the Medal of Honor from President Harry S Truman.  Silvestre Santana Herrera was perhaps an unlikely hero?  He was born in Mexico, but he had no idea that he wasn’t an American until he received his draft notice. Turns out that Herrera’s uncle had raised the boy as his own son in America. Herrera had been orphaned as an infant, and he had no idea that he’d ever lived in Mexico. Herrera could have avoided the draft, since he wasn’t an American, but his response was swift and sure: First, he enlisted in the Army. Second, he began studying to become an American citizen. “Well, my wife, Ramona, was born here in the United States and we have three kids,” he later explained, “so I’m going to the war to help my country.” Pfc.
